Who We Are
Thanks again for visiting our
website. If you're not a close friend or somehow related to us...wow! We're glad you
found us. "We" are David and Kelly, a couple of average 30 year olds from Chicago--with
rampant wanderlust. We have known each other for ten years (since the 80's!) and
have been seriously thinking of doing this for about two. We have both backpacked
independently through Europe and have returned together several times since.
The idea of setting out on a world trip has
always been a dream of ours, but like many people, we thought it would remain just
that. On Kelly's birthday back in 1997, we started talking about the trip again and
tried to think of all of the reasons why we shouldn't go......and we couldn't come up with
anything that would stick. This is not a tour of distrations, or a "geographical
cure" from our lives, but a chance to see experience things that we hope will enhance
the rest of our lives.
So, after logging in enough hours of
research to write a book, we are taking off for thirteen months (or until our money runs
out). The most important realization we have come to is we can't see and do
everything. We will be barely scratching the surface. We have already cut out a lot
of places we would like to go to spend more time in others.
We have also discovered this type of journey
is more common than we thought. When we first started planning, we thought we
were quite unique, especially due to the fact we hoped to bring a computer and digital
camera with us. We then started meeting all sorts of people (via the Internet) who
were either planning, participating in, or had just returned from a similar world
trip. We corresponded with one couple via email and postcards throughout the
entirety of their trip and have followed a few others who are still traveling. If
you have time, see our links, especially the sites for fellow round-the-world travelers: Kristina and David, Ben and Vija (traveling until January),
and GoGlobalGirl.
